Each year, the Chicago Architecture Center hosts Open House Chicago—a public festival that offers special event programming and behind-the-scenes access to significant sites across the city. This client came to the agency with a desire to develop a companion app to provide festival attendees with tools to make the most of their experience. Now available for iPhone and Android, the finished app allows users to access information on participating architectural sites and event programming, interactive maps, and real-time notifications. Users can also create custom itineraries, and bookmark, favorite, or share events, tours, and itineraries.

As one of the main developers on a small team, I was responsible for:

  • Styling and building reusable components for the Nuxt front-end
  • Guiding the modification and creation of data tables and columns in the client’s Airtable CMS to meet the needs of the app.
  • Writing requests for that data from the Airtable Web API and plugging it into front-end components.
  • Integrating the Google Maps Javascript API to populate site and event locations, as well as to provide the user with directions for tour itineraries.

This app will now be used for all Open Houses in the foreseeable future, and I’m thrilled to see my work in action supporting users throughout CAC's incredible programming.
